EU advises households to stockpile food and water in case of crisis

The European Commission (EC) has recommended that all European households maintain supplies of water, medication, batteries, and food to sustain themselves for 72 hours without external assistance in case of a crisis.

Report informs, citing El Pais, that the EC has issued this guidance as part of a broader strategy to prepare Europe for potential crises, such as armed conflicts, cyberattacks, pandemics, and the effects of the climate crisis.

The EC's draft strategy warns that Europe must be ready for large-scale incidents and cross-sector crises, including the possibility of armed aggression that could affect one or more member states. The document, which Brussels plans to present, still remains open for changes.

The EU also emphasizes that it must be able to deploy all available resources and assets in support of member states, which may include military resources.

Additionally, the EU plans to create a digital platform to provide citizens and travelers with information about risks and available options (such as shelters) in case of a crisis. The EC is also considering the coordination of strategic reserves of medicines, energy, and even food at the European level.

"In the event of armed aggression, armed forces will require civilian support to ensure the continuous functioning of the state and society," explains the draft.

The new European strategy, which is expected to be presented on Wednesday, is part of a broader package aimed at preparing the EU for any threats up until 2030.
