Dozen soldiers killed or arrested after mutiny attempt in Niger's capital

Dozens of military personnel have been killed or arrested following a mutiny attempt by a group of young soldiers in Niamey, the capital of Niger, Report informs, citing the Associated Press and state television.

The unrest lasted for about 24 hours, with clashes breaking out at a key military base located on the grounds of the Niamey international airport, not far from the presidential palace. Intense gunfire and explosions were heard in the area of the base during the night.

According to the RTN television channel, security forces managed to take control of the situation and detain the mutineers.

Niger's Minister of Defense, Salifou Modi, stated that a group of soldiers had taken several officers hostage at the base and opened fire on sensitive targets, violating military discipline and regulations.

According to analysts and diplomats, the mutineers remained on the base until late Saturday evening. The presidential guard secured the head of state's palace and was deployed to restore control over the military facility.
