Death toll from Venezuela earthquake surpasses 4,000

The death toll from the powerful earthquake that struck Venezuela has risen to 4,118.

According to Report, citing a post on Telegram by Jorge Rodríguez, Speaker of the National Assembly (Parliament) of the Bolivarian Republic, 16,740 people sustained injuries of varying severity, while another 17,907 residents have been left homeless.

The report states that 190 buildings were completely destroyed, while 856 others suffered significant damage. Search and rescue teams managed to save 6,462 people. A total of 29,966 people received medical treatment in hospitals and healthcare facilities. Assistance was provided to 86,794 families, and 9,766 tonnes of food were delivered to the disaster zone.

The earthquakes struck Venezuela on the evening of June 24. Two powerful tremors, measuring magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5, were recorded approximately 40 seconds apart. The epicenters of both quakes were located about 10 kilometers apart in Yaracuy State.
