Death toll from Venezuela earthquake rises to 5,208

The devastating earthquake in Venezuela has claimed the lives of 5,208 people, according to the country's National Assembly Chairman Jorge Rodríguez, who shared the update on Telegram, Report informs.

According to the government's daily update, 16,740 were injured and 17,907 were left homeless. A total of 190 buildings were completely destroyed, while 856 structures sustained serious damage. Rescue operations have saved 6,462 lives so far.

The destructive quake struck on June 24 in the evening, registering two tremors of 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude about 40 seconds apart. The epicenters were located in Yaracuy state, roughly 10 km apart. Since then, 1,388 aftershocks have been recorded.
