At least 30 people have died since early May in the Kigonzé camp for displaced persons in northeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, with authorities warning of a possible spread of the Ebola virus.
According to Report, citing Reuters, camp officials and humanitarian organizations recorded an unusually high mortality rate among residents.
They said the deceased exhibited symptoms consistent with Ebola hemorrhagic fever, including high fever, headache, and vomiting. However, the exact causes of death have not yet been confirmed, as patients and their relatives had recently refused testing.
The Kigonzé camp is located in the city of Bunia, which is considered an epicenter of the Ebola outbreak in the country.
Authorities are increasingly concerned that the virus could spread among more than 5 million internally displaced people in eastern D.R. Congo.
