High-ranking members of the US armed forces considered plans for a ground operation in Iran aimed at seizing stockpiles of highly enriched uranium.
According to Report, sources familiar with the matter told Report that Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Dan Caine made an urgent visit last month to US Central Command headquarters in Florida, where a classified briefing on a potential operation took place. He later presented possible courses of action to President Donald Trump.
According to CNN, the administration came close to approving the high-risk ground operation but ultimately rejected it after warnings about a possible strong Iranian response, potential US military casualties, and risks of global economic destabilization.
Sources said that, in parallel, Washington continued work on a possible agreement with Tehran regarding the Strait of Hormuz and Iran's nuclear program.
