Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney will address the European Parliament on September 17, amid efforts by Ottawa and Brussels to strengthen relations and escalating trade tensions between Canada and the United States.
According to Report's European bureau, Carney will travel to Strasbourg at the invitation of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
At the Parliament's plenary session on September 16, von der Leyen will deliver her annual State of the European Union address.
"The important visit by the Prime Minister will be an opportunity to deepen ties between the EU and Canada and strengthen our relationship," European Parliament President Roberta Metsola wrote on X.
Carney's visit will come after trade talks with Washington broke down. Following the US imposition of tariffs of up to 50% on Canadian goods worth around $20 billion on August 24, Ottawa said it was ready to take retaliatory measures.
Carney has advocated strengthening Canada's ties with European partners amid worsening relations with the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump.
