Brazil's rep at WUF13: Country's housing crisis driven by its metropolitan dimension

Brazil's housing crisis has a distinct metropolitan dimension, as large urban agglomerations are experiencing housing shortages, informal settlements, and chaotic urban expansion, Cristiana Scorza, Director of Urban and Metropolitan Development Structuring, said at an event at WUF13 in Baku, Report informs.

She stated that this situation exacerbates territorial inequality and places additional strain on infrastructure, transportation systems, and public services.

"The lack of coordination among public policies hinders the population's access to housing, urban services, and the opportunities that cities offer. How can this housing crisis be overcome in the Brazilian context? The answer inevitably lies in recognizing the informal city as an integral part of metropolitan dynamics. These territories are home to millions of people and require comprehensive public policies aimed at urbanization, land legalization, infrastructure development, urban mobility, and climate adaptation. Ensuring decent living conditions for the population in already developed territories and improving the existing urban environment must be a priority," she said.
