Borrell: War in Ukraine - war for freedom of Europe

In light of the sanctions against Russia, the European Union will face economic problems in the short term, but this is the price of freedom that Europe has to pay, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell said in an interview with the Austrian Krone newspaper, Report informs.

Josep Borrell noted that by imposing sanctions against Russia, Europe limits the economic opportunities of official Moscow, which depends on oil and gas sales and also needs Western technologies.

"Of course, we will face serious problems in the short term. It cannot be denied that the price of gas has risen. But we must be ready to pay the price for freedom. Because the war in Ukraine is not only a war of Ukrainians, it is a war for our freedom," Borrell said.

According to him, the energy crisis will be the biggest problem for the EU after the coronavirus pandemic, but the unity of the bloc's member countries will help to overcome it.
