At least 16 killed by heavy rains and flooding in Philippines — UPDATED

Flooding, landslides and accidents caused by nine days of heavy rainfall, which in some areas amounted to more than a month's worth of precipitation, have killed at least 16 people in the Philippines.

According to Report, Philippine media outlets said the rains, exacerbated by tropical storms, led to the closure of schools and government offices on the main island of Luzon, while streets in the capital Manila were flooded.

In some areas of Metro Manila, rainfall reached about 90% of the typical amount recorded for the entire month of August.
