6 arrested in Japan on suspicion of attempting to smuggle gold from China

Tokyo police have arrested six people suspected of attempting to smuggle 49 kilograms of gold bars worth approximately $147.05 million from China, hidden inside life-size dolls, Report informs via Japanese media.

Among those arrested are the executive of a Chinese company and an employee of the corporation.

The suspects attempted to smuggle the gold bars into Japan by air, concealing them inside three life-size dolls. They declared the dolls at customs as mannequins.

Police believe the dolls were intended to be collected by one of the group's members and transported through another suspect to the office of the Chinese company executive.

It is believed that the suspects have repeatedly smuggled gold using a similar trick, earning money by evading consumption taxes. Customs officers inspected the dolls and discovered gold bars hidden inside.
