'15-minute city' concept is fundamental model of sustainable and livable cities

The "15-minute city" concept is the fundamental model of sustainable and livable cities, stated Carlos Moreno, researcher and professor at France's Sorbonne University, at an event titled "Public infrastructure facilities supporting sustainable, resilient and adequate housing provision for urban communities" held within the framework of the 13th session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13) in Baku, Report informs

According to him, today's modern "3+3" model in cities is characterized by "urban obesity," an excessive number of automobiles, decreased physical activity, and unhealthy urbanization:

"In Paris, the freeing of the Seine riverbanks from automobiles and opening them to people is an example of this approach. The '15-minute city' model aims to move away from the 20th-century zoning principle of strict separation of functions. This model allows people to meet their daily needs within close proximity to where they live. Among the core principles of the concept are proximity to essential services, mixed-use spaces, high-quality public spaces, efficient public transportation, active mobility, social inclusivity, and technology serving quality of life."

Moreno stated that the concept is aligned with the transit-oriented development model and promotes low-carbon mobility, bicycle-friendly infrastructure, and the formation of more compact cities:

"The polycentric city model is about creating an urban environment where workplaces, services, and public spaces are integrated with transportation infrastructure. This model envisions the consolidation of essential functions such as living, working, accessing supplies, receiving care, learning, and recreation in one place."
