Azerbaijan, Ethiopia discuss expanding interparliamentary cooperation

Speaker of Azerbaijan's Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova met with Speaker of Ethiopia's House of People's Representatives Tagesse Chafo on July 28 as part of her official visit to Ethiopia, Report informs, citing the Milli Majlis Press and Public Relations Department.

Chafo said his country attaches great importance to relations with Azerbaijan, noting that the visit by the Azerbaijani parliament speaker will contribute to further deepening cooperation between the legislative bodies.

Gafarova, in turn, said the visit is an indication of the high value Azerbaijan attaches to mutual relations.

The meeting recalled the visits of Ethiopian President Taye Atske Selassie and Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali to Azerbaijan, as well as their meetings with President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev. The importance of the visit by Vice President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation Leyla Aliyeva to Ethiopia in January 2026 was also emphasized.

The sides noted broad opportunities for cooperation between the two countries in tourism, business, mutual investment, culture and humanitarian affairs. As a successful example of this cooperation, they pointed to the implementation of the ASAN service model in Ethiopia, describing it as Azerbaijan's footprint in the country.

The meeting included a broad exchange of views on further developing interparliamentary relations. Gafarova invited Chafo to pay an official visit to Azerbaijan, and the invitation was accepted with satisfaction.

The sides stressed that there is great potential for further deepening cooperation between the two parliaments.

Chafo said reforms are currently being carried out in Ethiopia's legislature and that Azerbaijan's experience in this area is of interest to his country.
