Expert: Opening of Zangazur corridor to contribute to prosperity of entire region

The development of the transport and trade corridor in Karabakh is the most important step of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, Iulian Chifu, director of the Center for Conflict Prevention and Early Warning (Romania), told Report.

“I think that the best perspectives come from the dialogue between Azerbaijan and Armenia and the added value of the offer of developing the corridor of transportation and trade that would enable Armenia to enter and reintegrate in the region, with the perspective of opening the borders with both Turkey and Azerbaijan. This is the most important step of President Ilham Aliyev. It would help both the security and the prosperity of the region, Armenia and Azerbaijan alike,” he said.

Chifu noted that the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict was always a blockage for the development of the South Caucasus Region. Fixing the communication and development between the three Caucasian countries was in the forefront of the concerns of the international community.

On the other hand, a solution to the conflict was necessary for the Turkic world, including direct communication through the Zangazur corridor between Turkey, Nakhchivan, southern Armenia and the newly liberated regions of Azerbaijan, and then to Central Asia, he said.

“It also means a direct connection between all the territories of Azerbaijan,” he concluded.
