UNFCCC calls for stronger Azerbaijan-Türkiye circular economy ties

Azerbaijan and Türkiye should strengthen practical cooperation on the circular economy, Daniele Violetti, Senior Director for Program Coordination at the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), said.

According to Report, he made the remarks on the fourth day of Baku Climate Action Week 2026 (BCAW 2026).

Violetti said resource extraction, production, consumption and waste management lie at the heart of the climate challenge.

"The way we source products, manufacture and use them, and manage them once they become waste accounts for a large share of global emissions, resource uncertainty and vulnerability. A circular economy built on waste prevention, reuse, repair, recycling and smarter business models is a direct lever for climate mitigation, adaptation and resilience. It is one of the clearest bridges between climate ambition on paper and implementation on the ground," he said.

Violetti noted that as the world moves toward COP31 in Antalya, the momentum generated in Baku should be maintained by turning circular economy principles into policy and investment opportunities.

"We need to build practical cooperation between Türkiye, Azerbaijan and partners near and far so that COP31 can point to it as evidence that the system works. This is exactly the kind of practical discussion needed in the current implementation phase," he added.
