UNESCO official: Housing enables women's full public participation

For women, housing means security, economic independence, and the opportunity for full participation in public life, Inés Sánchez de Madariaga, UNESCO's Chair on Gender, Professor at the Technical University of Madrid, said at the Women's Assembly held within the framework of the 13th session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13), Report informs.

She noted that without safe housing, women are exposed to poverty and violence:

"That is why housing is not just a physical shelter. The problem of affordable housing remains particularly relevant for women living in informal settlements. Women are key participants in cities and public life. It is especially important to support women from young and vulnerable groups. Women must actively participate in urban planning. We also call for stronger support for local women's organizations and ensuring gender-sensitive budgeting."
