UN-Habitat: Housing provision must align with urban safety and climate resilience

Housing provision must be considered together with urban safety and climate resilience, Kazuko Ishigaki, Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific at UN-Habitat, said during an event held within the 13th Session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13) in Baku, Report informs.

Ishigaki emphasized that housing is increasingly linked with urban safety, essential services, climate resilience, and inclusive governance:

"Progress in one area depends on progress in others. Most importantly, this is not something any single agency can implement alone. It relies on 'One UN' collaboration, which brings together mandates, expertise, and local presence to support cities more consistently."

She highlighted Cambodia as a practical example in the Asia-Pacific region: "Through partnerships with the UN Human Security Trust Fund and other UN agencies, housing provision became a springboard for strengthening services, improving safety, and supporting local governance in communities facing multiple overlapping vulnerabilities. The work began with local realities, built strong partnerships with communities and municipalities, and connected housing improvements to broader systems of resilience and inclusivity."
