UN-Habitat: Housing investments can drive economic recovery

Investments in the housing sector can become a key driver of economic development and community recovery after crises, UN-Habitat Program Director Anaclaudia Rossbach said at a WUF13 event in Baku, Report informs.

She emphasized that when rebuilding territories, it is important to focus not only on housing construction but also on developing the infrastructure and basic services necessary for the sustainable development of communities.

"It is necessary to create not only infrastructure but also to ensure access to services, as these form the basis for the continued growth and resilience of communities," she noted.

Rossbach emphasized that the housing sector should be viewed as a fully-fledged economic sector with a broad value chain.

"The housing sector is an industry capable of supporting both large and small businesses," she said.

According to her, investments in housing create a multiplier effect for the local economy, promote employment growth, increase incomes, and stimulate economic recovery.

She also noted that investments in housing should not be viewed as an expense, but as a long-term tool for economic development and strengthening community resilience.
