Modern urban governance models should take into account the actual expansion of agglomerations beyond the administrative borders of municipalities.
Report informs that Fiona McCluney, a representative of UN-Habitat's Global Solutions Division, said this at an event held as part of WUF13.
According to her, the discussion of metropolitan governance is becoming especially relevant amid growing climate threats, social vulnerability and housing pressure in major cities.
"Environmental risks, transport, housing and services do not stop at administrative borders," she said.
McCluney stressed that countries need to adapt governance, planning and financing systems to the new conditions of urbanization, as well as make greater use of international experience in metropolitan development.
