Türkiye works on new approaches to climate-resilient urban development

Türkiye is working on new approaches to climate-resilient urban development, Tuğba Dinçbaş, Deputy Director at the Climate Change Directorate of the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, said.

According to Report, she made the remarks on the fourth day of Baku Climate Action Week 2026 (BCAW 2026).

"Building sustainable and climate-resilient cities is one of our main areas of focus. Cities are where many of the challenges caused by climate change come together. Rapid urbanization, rising energy demand, extreme heat and flooding, as well as other climate impacts, are placing growing pressure on urban infrastructure and communities," she said.

Dinçbaş noted that cities are also where many solutions can be brought together.

"That is the key point. This is why our approach is to view cities as integrated systems. This includes resilient urban development, energy-efficient buildings and buildings that are increasingly shifting toward electrification. This is also part of the electrification initiative we are working on under the Action Agenda," she said.

Dinçbaş added that access to finance is another important element of the approach and will form part of Türkiye's SURF initiative, which is expected to be presented in Baku next week.

She also stressed the importance of creating stronger links between national climate ambitions and implementation at the local level.
