Passive architecture can reduce the energy consumption of new buildings by half, stated Huseyn Hasanov, head of the Information System Management Group Digital Ecology at the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Azerbaijan, during the 13th World Urban Forum (WUF13) in Baku, according to Report.
Hasanov noted that buildings account for 30% of global energy consumption and 26% of global emissions. At the same time, 80% of the buildings that will exist in 2050 have not yet been built.
He said that a solution could be passive architecture, where the correct choice of building form, construction materials, and orientation relative to the sun can reduce the energy consumption of new buildings by up to 50%. Replacing a fossil fuel boiler with a modern heat pump provides additional energy savings of up to 75%.
"And this is even before installing a single solar panel or a smart system," Hasanov emphasized.
