Lada cars account for more than half of vehicles scrapped in Azerbaijan — EXCLUSIVE

A total of 36,728 vehicles have been taken out of circulation in Azerbaijan since the launch of the vehicle scrappage program, including 18,852 in January-August this year, a source in OJSC Təmiz Şəhər (Clean City) said in response to an inquiry from Report.

Under the state program, 1,991 new locally manufactured vehicles have so far been sold at preferential terms. In addition, more than 1 million manats in one-time payments have been transferred to applicants' bank accounts.

Lada (VAZ) vehicles account for 56% of all scrapped vehicles. GAZ vehicles make up 9%, Mercedes-Benz 6%, Opel 3% and Daewoo 2%.

A large number of vehicles in use in Azerbaijan become unserviceable every year due to wear and tear and road accidents. According to statistics, one in five vehicles in the country currently fails to meet environmental requirements and safety standards.

An electronic portal has been launched to simplify the process of handing over vehicles for scrapping. After a vehicle is handed over to the operator, its owner receives a confirmation document, which can be used to obtain a one-time payment or a discount on the purchase of a new locally manufactured vehicle.

The transfer of vehicles for scrapping is entirely voluntary and is not mandatory.
