Climatic conditions are an important factor for the economy of cities, Francesca Elisa Leonelli, a specialist in Earth remote sensing data processing and green transition at the European Space Agency, said during the World Urban Forum (WUF13) in Baku, Report informs
According to her, regions with poor air quality or high temperatures are located in less favorable areas: "If we think about how we can help cities grow economically, informal settlements are an important aspect. Earth observations and satellite data can also show where interventions are most needed in terms of economic modernization and growth. By comparing data, we can also understand to what extent a city is growing vertically or horizontally."
She added that thermal indicators help understand where exactly heat affects people's lives the most at the city scale: "Such information has a significant impact on decisions and investments. We are studying what impact equipping buildings with green roofs will have on the local climate. The impact of installing a green roof in the city center will be much greater in places with fewer trees, less vegetation, and more soil area."
