Carlon: Azerbaijan should play key role in enforcing sanctions on transit routes

Azerbaijan needs to play a central role in ensuring strict sanctions enforcement along major transit routes to become a true regional hub, Chargé d'Affaires of the US Embassy in Azerbaijan Amy Carlon said at a conference in Baku on sanctions compliance and financial risk management, Report informs.

She noted that as a regional transportation hub connecting Europe and Asia, Azerbaijan plays a particularly important role in regional and global trade.

"Azerbaijan's strategic position as the only indispensable participant in the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (Middle Corridor) makes it a growing player in global commerce and in ensuring the integrity of international supply chains. Furthermore, TRIPP will not only connect Azerbaijan with the Nakhchivan region but will also provide additional impetus to the growth of the Trans-Caspian route.

To be a true regional hub, Azerbaijan must play a central role in ensuring strict sanctions enforcement along these and other major transit routes," stated Carlon.

The American diplomat also emphasized that, given the volume and speed of trade, some entities may attempt to use these routes for the transshipment of dual-use goods and other sensitive items.

"We need vigilant oversight and robust compliance mechanisms, supported by both the state and businesses, to maintain the transparency of these trade flows and the effectiveness of sanctions regimes," she added.
