The spirit of historic neighborhoods and buildings must be preserved in modern urban planning, Adib Benbrahim, Morocco's State Secretary for Housing, said during an event held within the 13th Session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13) in Baku, Report informs.
The expert stressed that cultural heritage is deeply tied to cultural identity and history, and should not be overlooked even when addressing social issues such as unemployment in historic districts: "We must remember that cultural heritage is largely about cultural identity and the cultural past."
Highlighting Morocco's experience, Benbrahim noted that they never compromise the historical essence of buildings and neighborhoods: "We act according to clear planning principles. I believe Morocco's sensitive approach to historic buildings and neighborhoods plays an important role in its recognition as a tourist country."
