Joint strategies can be developed to strengthen the climate resilience of communities and ecosystems through biodiversity-based habitat management within the framework of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization, with support from regional financial institutions, Pedro León Cortés Ruiz, ambassador of Columbia to Kenya, said during World Urban Forum 13 in Baku.
Report quotes him as saying Colombia is the second most biodiverse country in the world, but at the same time highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change.
He noted that this dual situation is particularly evident in Amazonian settlements. In 2017, a landslide in Mocoa, triggered by heavy rainfall, destroyed entire neighborhoods, killing more than 300 people and leaving 17,000 people homeless and without livelihoods.
