Africa's housing shortage to reach 130 million units by 2030

Africa faces a housing shortage of 51 million units.

Report informs that Mustapha Njie, CEO of TAF Africa Global, said this at the panel session titled "Developer Coalition for the Promotion of Productive Partnerships in the Global South, and Preliminary Presentation of the CAHF Housing Finance Yearbook 2025/2026" held as part of the 13th World Urban Forum (WUF13) in Baku.

According to him, the African continent is currently facing a severe housing crisis.

"Africa's housing shortage stands at more than 51 million units and, according to forecasts, this figure will rise to 130 million by 2030. One in three urban residents is unable to access affordable and safe housing and is forced to live in informal settlements. Traditional approaches have proved ineffective.

Governments cannot shoulder the financial burden alone, while fragmented private-sector initiatives are unable to provide the necessary scale," the developer stressed.

Njie pointed to the need to develop public-private partnership as the only effective tool to respond to this challenge.
