ADY: Construction of first 7-kilometer section of railway continues along Nakhchivan-Armenia border

Construction work is currently underway on the first seven-kilometer section of the railway in the Ordubad direction along the Azerbaijan-Armenia border, Azerbaijan Railways CJSC (ADY) told Report.

ADY said it continues reconstruction of the railway network in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. The first phase of design and construction, which began in late 2025, covers the Salammalik, Ordubad, Aza and Julfa sections.

The railway has an axial length of 194 kilometers and a total length of 264 kilometers, including sidings. A total of 814 engineering structures are planned to be constructed or reconstructed along the railway, including 10 stations, three platforms, 29 bridges, 11 overpasses and various crossings. Twelve protective galleries along the route are also undergoing major reconstruction.

Earthworks have been completed on a six-kilometer section, while new rail-sleeper track panels have been installed along a 700-meter section starting from Salammalik station.

Following completion of the major reconstruction, the railway's annual freight capacity is expected to reach 15 million tons.

The reconstructed railway network in Nakhchivan will connect to the Zangazur Corridor from the Ordubad side, while the Horadiz-Aghband railway line will connect from mainland Azerbaijan. This is expected to establish a direct railway link between mainland Azerbaijan and Nakhchivan, while also creating a direct railway connection with Türkiye.

Under the agreement reached in Washington on August 8, 2025, the creation of the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity (TRIPP) envisages restoring railway connectivity along the Zangazur Corridor.

Work is also continuing on other sections of the corridor, with 60% of work completed on the Alat-Osmanli section and 73% on the Horadiz-Aghband section.

The new connection is expected to expand the capabilities of the Middle Corridor, support the development of freight transportation between Europe and Asia, strengthen access to Turkish and European markets, and significantly increase Azerbaijan's transit potential. The Zangazur Corridor will also have strategic importance in terms of connecting with the North-South transport route.
