For Azerbaijan, wrestling is not just a sport, but also a part of national identity, character, and culture, said Parvin Piriyev, Secretary General of the Azerbaijan Wrestling Federation (AWF), Report informs.
He spoke about the significance of the memorandum signed between the US organization "Wrestling for Peace" and the AWF.
"At international arenas and events, we are often asked questions about the success of wrestling in Azerbaijan. While not all of us may be professional wrestlers, we are well-versed in wrestling techniques. Wrestling for Azerbaijan is not just a sport, but also a part of our national identity, character, and culture. When we met with Dan Russell (Executive Director of Wrestling for Peace - ed.), we wanted to be part of this project. That's because this is about peace. We are proud to participate in all projects that serve peace, friendship, and professionalism," Piriyev emphasized.
The official also noted that the federation's goal is to make Azerbaijan a flagship wrestling country on the global stage.
"Despite its small population, Azerbaijan is a country of wrestling. Our goal is to become a flagship wrestling country on the global stage. Therefore, we strive to be part of all useful and new initiatives. The federation's core approach to the projects we are implementing is that this is taken into account in all areas of its activities. The values, vision, and approach of the signed memorandum will be applied at every step. We intend to reach all groups in need of social assistance, support, and inspiration, regardless of country," added Parvin Piriyev.
The U17 World Wrestling Championships will be held in Baku from July 27 to August 2.
