Azerbaijan has launched the development of an electronic water management information system and a national water atlas based on geographic information technologies.
According to Report, the announcement was made by Ilham Bayramov, Deputy Chairman of the Azerbaijan State Water Resources Agency, during the panel discussion "Water Strategies: Infrastructure and Digitalization" at the 2nd International Water Management Exhibition and Conference – Baku Water Week.
Bayramov noted that several state agencies have already joined the project, including the Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, Ministry of Digital Development and Transport, and Azerbaijan"s Space Agency (Azercosmos).
"Once the electronic water management information system is in place, the entire water flow-from rivers, surface and underground sources to end-users-will be monitored and recorded. Additionally, the regulation, delivery, and use of water will be managed and tracked online," he said.
He also emphasized that this is the first time a digital water atlas is being developed in Azerbaijan:
"The main goal of the atlas is to compile a unified geographic information database covering all of the country's water resources, infrastructure, and both underground and surface water sources. The system will integrate with other government databases and feature a multifunctional online interface. As a result, relevant institutions, companies, and water users will be able to easily access and benefit from the system."
