ICMP director inspects remains of people missing in First Karabakh War

The Director-General of the International Commission on Missing Persons Kathryne Bomberger got acquainted with the forensic examination and identification of the remains of thousands of Azerbaijani citizens who went missing during the First Karabakh War at the Association of Forensic Medical Examination and Pathological Anatomy (AFMEPA), of the Health Ministry of Azerbaijan, the ministry told Report.

Kathryne Bomberger and Andreas Kleiser, ICMP Director for Policy and Cooperation, who are on an official visit to Azerbaijan, visited the MTE and PA.

Adalat Hasanov, AFMEPA Director-General, informed the guests about the tasks before the association in the forensic examination and identification of the remains of thousands of military and civilian citizens missing during the First Karabakh War.

The remains of corpses found in mass graves in the liberated territories are accepted as forensic material evidence in the relevant departments of the AFMEPA.

Together with the relevant law enforcement agencies and under the instruction of authorities, the association also takes samples for exhumation, forensic and genetic examination of the remains of unknown martyrs who died during the First Karabakh War and were buried in various regions of the country.

In turn, the Director-General of the International Commission praised the work done in the forensic examination of the remains of Azerbaijani citizens found in the liberated territories.

Then, the ICMP management closely monitored the forensic medical examination and storage of the remains of the missing persons in the MTE and PA departments, as well as in the newly established Forensic Medicine Department II created specifically for this purpose by the Ministry of Health. They got acquainted and exchanged views on thematic issues.
