First complex craniofacial surgery in South Caucasus performed in Azerbaijan

A highly complex craniofacial surgery has been performed in Azerbaijan for the first time in the South Caucasus.

The Health Ministry told Report that the operation was carried out at the Scientific Surgery Center named after Academician M. Topchubashov on a patient with a rare genetic disorder, Crouzon syndrome.

The team of specialists was led by plastic surgeon, Doctor of Medical Sciences Elchin Mammadov, and neurosurgeon Afer Allahverdiyev. During the operation, the doctors performed a complex osteotomy, moved the fronto-orbital complex and the midface into the correct position, and installed special distraction devices.

Crouzon syndrome is a congenital condition in which the bones of the skull fuse too early. This leads to serious problems, including facial deformity, breathing difficulties, including apnea, vision problems and severe functional disorders.
