Zelensky's proposal to celebrate Eid al-Fitr at State level welcomed

"Ukraine is a multicultural society, and we should consider traditions of all the peoples who live in the country."

MP of Ukraine, Head of the Verkhovna Rada Committee for foreign policy issues, and inter-parliamentary cooperation, Alexander Merezhko told Report commenting on the proposal of Vladimir Zelensky to celebrate Ramadan as a public holiday.

The Deputy noted that he liked the idea.

In turn, religious scholar Ruslan Khalikov believes that such a statement by President Zelensky shows respect for various citizens of Ukraine: "A few years ago, only those celebrated by the Orthodox majority were recognized as public holidays. Not so long ago, we added Christmas to the list according to the Gregorian calendar, but it is quite natural that all citizens should be on equal terms. We can achieve it either by completely deleting religious holidays from the cycle of public holidays, or adding holidays of different faiths."

According to Khalikov, such a decision is a step towards establishing social justice, mutual respect, and tolerance in society.

"Of course, President Zelensky is a politician and made this statement not only ahead of the Eid al-Fitr but also the day of remembrance for the victims of the Crimean Tatar genocide. Decision can be explained as an attempt to strengthen the loyalty of the Muslim Ummah of Ukraine, in particular, the Crimea. In any case, the inclusion of these holidays in the annual cycle of Ukraine is long overdue, and this decision should be welcomed."
