WUF13 key for Azerbaijan's global experience exchange - OPINION

The 13th Session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13) in Baku served as an important platform for Azerbaijan to share and gain international experience, Transport expert Rauf Aghamirzayev told Report.

The expert noted that every international event brings new knowledge to the host country and city: "It is gratifying that Baku has once again become the venue for high-level international events. Among WUF13's contributions are youth gaining international experience, the expansion of volunteer movements, and lessons learned from transport operating under special regimes. Such events significantly enhance our country's recognition."

Aghamirzayev believes that Azerbaijan is currently one of the world's largest construction sites since World War II, as liberated territories are being rebuilt from scratch: "Sharing this experience makes WUF13 a valuable platform. Cities worldwide face ecological and climate change risks. Azerbaijan and neighboring countries feel these risks directly. Discussions on noise pollution, environmental challenges, traffic congestion, urbanization impacts, and transport transformation made the forum highly relevant."

He emphasized that inclusivity was a key focus during COP29 and WUF13: "Inclusivity was fully ensured at the venues, thanks to Azerbaijani specialists. This experience should be applied in our cities to improve accessibility. Such steps positively contribute to the socialization and integration of people with physical disabilities."

The expert also highlighted Azerbaijan's strong tourism potential, stressing the need to expand pedestrian routes, remove barriers, and increase level crossings: "People should be able to walk comfortably and cross streets without traveling long distances. Standards applied at WUF13 should be extended to our cities. This could create a lasting legacy."
