Japan is interested in expanding cooperation with Azerbaijani municipalities, including the development of partnership ties and student exchanges, Report informs.

According to the Embassy of Japan in Baku, Ambassador Katsuya Watanabe visited the Japanese city of Ito at the end of March, where he held a meeting with the city's mayor Kazuya Sugimoto.

"During the meeting, the possibilities of cooperation between the city of Ito and the Ismayilli district of Azerbaijan, as well as relations between Azerbaijani and Japanese municipalities, were discussed," the statement said.

The ambassador also expressed readiness to support the resumption of student exchange programs between the regions, including initiatives for hosting students with host families.

As noted, Ito and Ismayilli have been sister cities since 2013. During this period, a number of successful joint projects have been implemented, including student exchange programs.
