The meeting in Washington will remain one of the important pages in the history of our country's foreign policy and will contribute to the strengthening and development of relations between Azerbaijan and the United States, leading consultant of the Center for Analysis of International Relations (CAIR), political scientist Sultan Zahidov told Report.
He noted that with the Washington agreements, the United States recognized the new geopolitical realities created by Azerbaijan in the South Caucasus after the Second Karabakh War.
"It was Azerbaijan's victory in 2020 and the one-day anti-terrorist operation carried out in 2023 that put an end to the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict. This paved the way for the signing of peace documents and forced Armenia to change its geopolitical direction. Otherwise, Pashinyan would not be in Washington today, but in Moscow," Zahidov said.
The political scientist added that the geopolitical environment created by Azerbaijan allows opening communication lines in the region, using the potential of the South Caucasus and ensuring cooperation, stability and development: "The victory in 2020 laid the foundation for this process. In 2022, Azerbaijan presented five key principles for achieving peace, the text was agreed upon and initialed on August 8, 2025. It is safe to say that Azerbaijan was the architect of this meeting. The opening of the Zangazur Corridor will connect Türkiye with Central Asia and the South Caucasus, and Europe with China. At the same time, this is an important step in terms of developing the peace process between Azerbaijan and Armenia. The main thing is that Armenia complies with these agreements and supports the process by changing its constitution."
The expert emphasized that despite the smear campaigns by some forces that could not accept Azerbaijan's victory in the Second Karabakh War, thanks to the country's consistent and pragmatic steps, a revival has begun in the South Caucasus: "Of course, some regional powers may not want the Zangazur Corridor to open. They have their own geopolitical interests, and they do not want the US presence in the region. But Azerbaijan, together with Türkiye, the US and other partner countries, will overcome all difficulties. This is a clear indicator of Azerbaijan's victory in both the military and political arenas."
