Viswanath: Urban inclusivity linked to participation of youth, women in urban development processes

The safety and inclusiveness of cities are directly linked to the participation of youth and women in urban development processes, Kalpana Viswanath, CEO and co-founder of Safetipin, said at the "Youth Leadership for Safe and Resilient Cities" event at WUF13 in Baku, Report informs.

She stated that Safetipin was founded 13 years ago with the goal of improving the safety of women and youth in cities using digital tools and public space analysis.

The CEO noted that one of its key tools is the My Safetipin mobile service, which allows for crowdsourcing data on the safety of urban spaces.

"Throughout our work, we realized that urban safety is linked to many other elements of the urban environment-mobility, urban planning, social and cultural norms, as well as political participation and public policy," she said.

Viswanath emphasized that young women today are actively participating in the transformation of the urban environment, despite existing challenges: "Young women aren't waiting for the world to change itself. They're stepping forward to change the world."
