Millions of young people around the world live in housing conditions unsuitable for living or feel the impact of climate change, stated Felipe Paullier, the Assistant Secretary-General for Youth Affairs at the UN, said at the Children and Youth Assembly held within the framework of WUF13.
Report quotes him as saying for young people around the world, home is not just the place where they live:
"Home is the place where they grow up, where they feel safe, and where opportunities begin. However, for a great number of young people, this foundation is still uncertain. This must change. Every young person deserves a home that provides them with safety. Every city, community, and neighborhood has a responsibility to make this possible."
The Secretary-General's Envoy emphasized that investing in affordable housing means ensuring access to basic services and creating safe and inclusive public spaces where all children and young people can thrive:
"But houses alone are not enough. We need to build cities that are healthy, inclusive, and full of opportunities for young people to live in. This is a city with affordable housing, clean air, and green spaces, and at the same time a city where transportation and basic urban services are safe and accessible," he stated.
According to him, climate change is not a distant threat: "Young people around the world are already on the front lines. Today, I appeal to policymakers, city leaders, and institutions. Please listen to young people, invest in their solutions, and institutionalize their participation in urban planning and governance. Treat them not just as beneficiaries, but as partners. Because we are building trust, building resilience, and building a shared future."
