UN official: 2.8B people worldwide live in places without adequate housing conditions

About 2.8 billion people in the world live in places without adequate housing conditions, UN Assistant Secretary-General and Deputy Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Elizabeth Maruma Mrema during her speech at a session held within the framework of WUF13 on the topic "The climate-housing nexus: Can we scale climate-resilient housing without deepening inequality or displacement?" Report informs

According to her, research should be conducted and problems should be taken into account to address gaps in the housing market:

"Construction companies do not take climate conditions into account and only pursue their own profits. As a result, people working in those areas suffer. Companies build houses at the lowest cost but are unaware of the consequences."

The UN official noted that the main problem here is the issue of financing.

"Unsustainable construction materials are used in construction. Expensive and quality supplies are not used. There are also gaps in the political sphere in this regard. Oversight is weak."
