UN-Habitat calls for using experience of ancient civilizations for climate adaptation

Ancient civilizations can provide a source of modern solutions for adapting to climate change, particularly in the area of water scarcity, UN-Habitat Jordan Program Coordinator Deema Abu Thiab said at an event within the 13th session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13) in Baku, Report informs.

"The experience of ancient civilizations in the region can be used for modern climate solutions, especially in the context of water scarcity," said Deema Abu Thiab.

She noted that Jordan places particular emphasis on the legacy of the Nabataean civilization, which created complex water supply systems, including in the area of Petra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

"We have begun to study and restore these water systems, as well as Roman engineering solutions, to reuse them for water collection," said the UN-Habitat representative.

According to her, historical infrastructure can be reimagined and adapted to modern conditions, including to combat the effects of climate change.

Abu Thiab emphasized that ancient civilizations, in many cases, demonstrated more sustainable approaches to resource use than modern urban systems.
