Azerbaijan had to struggle for nearly 30 years to liberate its territories that were under Armenian occupation, Taras Kuzio, Professor of Political Science at the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, told Report.
“Azerbaijan had to wait and fight for almost three decades after the end of the First Karabakh War to liberate its occupied territories — in 2020 and 2023. Therefore, when the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev spoke in Khankandi, he was conveying to Ukrainians the experience of his people,” the political scientist said.
He also emphasized that after the collapse of the USSR, two countries — Russia and Armenia — attacked their neighbors in attempts to occupy territory.
“Azerbaijan is not alone in condemning Russian imperialism and the infringement on the territorial integrity of neighboring countries. Only two former Soviet republics — Russia and Armenia — have undertaken irredentist actions against their neighbors since 1991, disregarding the Alma-Ata Declaration of December 1991, which stated that republican borders would become international borders as of January 1, 1992,” he concluded.
During a meeting with participants of the 3rd Shusha Global Media Forum in Khankandi on Julu 19, President Ilham Aliyev, in response to a question from Ukrainian journalist Dmytro Gordon, said that Ukraine, following Azerbaijan’s example, should never accept or agree to the occupation of its territories.
