Baku holds an exceptionally important place in the recent history of international climate cooperation, Simon Stiell, Executive Secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), said in a video address at the opening ceremony of the Fourth Climate Week of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (CW4), Report informs.
According to Stiell, at COP29 in Baku, countries agreed on a new global climate finance goal of $300 billion annually by 2035 and called for climate finance from public and private sources to be increased to at least $1.3 trillion per year by 2035.
Stiell stressed that the Baku-to-Belem Roadmap to mobilize $1.3 trillion sets out practical steps to direct financing where it is needed most.
"For me, returning to Baku is not simply a symbolic gesture. Baku is a benchmark for implementing the decisions that have been adopted, showing whether the promises made in negotiating rooms are being turned into real projects, investments and measures to protect people on the ground," he said.
According to the UNFCCC Executive Secretary, the key task at this stage is to ensure the practical implementation of the climate agreements that have been reached.
"We know that climate cooperation delivers results. Without it, humanity would be heading toward catastrophic levels of global warming. Thanks to this cooperation, we are still continuing the fight," he added.
