Sharp: Post-conflict urban recovery is impossible without rebuilding social ties

The recovery of cities affected by conflicts cannot be reduced only to infrastructure reconstruction; reviving social ties and communities themselves is no less important.

Report informs that Deen Sharp, a consultant at the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), said this during WUF13.

According to him, reconstruction amid ongoing conflicts is impossible without broad political frameworks and peace agreements.

"Without political arrangements and peace agreements, it will be extremely difficult to resolve many problems related to post-conflict recovery," the expert stressed.

Sharp also drew attention to the fact that the role of local communities is often idealized in international discussions.

"It is necessary to understand that in conflict conditions, communities themselves are often destroyed, while social ties are extremely weakened," the expert said.
