Rodrigo Perpétuo advocates integration of climate, urban policy

There is a significant gap between global climate mechanisms and the capacity of municipalities, and this gap must be addressed through closer integration of climate and urban policy.

Report informs that Rodrigo Perpétuo, ICLEI regional director for South America, said this while speaking at a meeting of the Baku Sustainability Coalition for Urban Climate Action and Sustainable Urbanization held as part of WUF13 in Baku.

According to him, despite strong political interest in closing this gap, the key demands of cities have not yet been sufficiently reflected in COP outcome documents or in the process of reviewing the New Urban Agenda.

He called for this "voice of cities" to be conveyed to negotiators so that it is reflected in official agreements.

Perpétuo stressed that this is important for expanding climate finance and directing funds more effectively to urban projects, especially in the areas of housing, land use and sustainable urban development.

ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability - is an international non-governmental organization that supports sustainable development. ICLEI provides technical advice to local authorities in setting and achieving sustainable development goals.
