Political expert: US and Azerbaijan enjoy close partnership

The United States and Azerbaijan enjoy a close partnership, head of the Baku Club of Political Scientists Zaur Mammadov told Report.

"It is no coincidence that the US played a key role in signing the Contract of the Century," he said.

"From my point of view, for the United States, the entire South Caucasus is a kind of arena for the geopolitical struggle with Russia... Against this background, Azerbaijan's role as a communication and transport corridor is increasing, and our country's oil and gas potential is also growing due to recent events evolving in the world and particularly in Ukraine," the expert noted.

The political scientist states that in a letter to US President Joe Biden, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev outlined such points as the development of relations in security, economics, and cooperation to ensure security and peace in the region.

Biden's letter to Ilham Aliyev emphasizes the notion of 'peace' in the region.

"This means that Armenia should assess the future soberly and not live with illusions. For the United States, the stability and peace in both Azerbaijan and Armenia are important because this will strengthen the relationship between the states of the region," Mammadov said.

The expert added that we can see close cooperation between the two countries in Afghanistan and Iraq when the military from Azerbaijan participated in peacekeeping operations in these countries.

"In general, one way or another, the leading countries of the world, which include the United States, are interested in cooperation with Azerbaijan, which indicates that Azerbaijan is a regional and a global political actor in such a difficult time," he said.
