The safety and freedom of movement of young women is a key indicator of a smart city, stated Indian representative Mery Sadumah at the event "Youth Leadership for Safe and Sustainable Cities" held within the framework of the 13th session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13) in Baku, Report informs.
According to her, the development of cities is often discussed through the prism of infrastructure, technologies, and the "smart cities" concept, but the main issue is the real accessibility of the urban environment for all residents.
Sadumah noted that in the Indian city of Ajmer, mobility remains a serious problem for many young women: restrictions on movement after dark, families' fears about their safety, public transport, lack of infrastructure, and so on.
According to her, the "Cities for Youth" program in Ajmer was launched with the participation of 30 young girls and four mentors. Participants documented problems of the urban environment, including the safety and accessibility of public spaces.
