Access to land resources and urban territories is becoming increasingly important for ensuring the sustainability of food systems in cities, a representative of Kenya said at the "Youth Leadership for Safe and Sustainable Cities" event within the framework of WUF13.
Report quotes him as saying land issues are central to the urbanization process, as land serves as the foundation both for housing construction and food production.
"In a number of cities, agricultural land is increasingly being converted for residential development. This places additional pressure on food systems and reduces household resilience," he said.
The Kenyan representative also spoke about work with the Mazingira Institute and international partner initiatives aimed at improving urban environmental sustainability.
He noted that in Nairobi, initiatives are being implemented to expand access to public spaces that allow residents to grow food for their own needs.
"Such practices contribute to strengthening household resilience, including income growth of up to 50%, as well as improving quality of life through increased spending on healthcare, education, and leisure," he said.
