The Middle Corridor opens up opportunities to attract investment, create jobs and increase attention to the Central Asian region.
Report informs that Katja Schaefer, UN-Habitat's interregional adviser for Eastern Europe and Central Asia, said this during WUF13.
"It is interesting to observe how governments interact in a context where the Middle Corridor is seen as an opportunity to draw attention to the region, create jobs and attract financial capital," Schaefer noted.
She stressed that every new infrastructure project has an impact on territory, the urban environment and people"s lives.
According to the UN-Habitat representative, when developing new cities, it is important to take sustainability issues into account, including water resources, climate risks and the consequences of sandstorms.
Schaefer also noted the need for a polycentric approach to the development of cities and settlements in countries with large territories and different urbanization patterns.
