Azerbaijan has proved that it is capable of defending its national interests and territory, Slovak Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Robert Kaliňák said.
According to Report, Kaliňák made the remarks at an event dedicated to Slovakia's Constitution Day and Armed Forces Day.
He stressed that concepts such as sovereignty, the Constitution, identity, freedom and democracy take on particular significance when viewed through Azerbaijan's experience.
"Sometimes in Europe, it may seem to us that these words are merely formalities, just important and grand words that have to be said. But especially here, in Baku, in Azerbaijan, the struggle for sovereignty is perceived in a completely different way," Kaliňák said.
The Slovak minister noted that it is always possible to achieve results and protect the interests of one's people and state territory.
"I would also like to congratulate Azerbaijan on a struggle that lasted 30 years and ultimately ended successfully," he said.
Kaliňák noted that Slovakia, as a member of the European Union and NATO, stands for peace and regards it as one of the most important conditions for its people.
"We always say that we are fighting for peace because peace is extremely important for our people. But we want to be allies not only on sunny days, but also on rainy days," he said.
The minister added that the security situation in Europe is currently complicated.
"That is precisely why we are sending our troops to help our friends in Poland and Romania. But we also remember the time when we tried to support matters related to Azerbaijan, and this makes our friendship very strong," he said.
Kaliňák also expressed satisfaction at being in Baku and celebrating Slovakia's national holiday together with Azerbaijani partners.
"I am very happy to be here, to celebrate our national holiday with you and to take part tomorrow in ADEX, a very important defense industry exhibition in Baku," he said.
The minister thanked the guests for attending the event and expressed hope for further communication and discussions on issues of mutual interest.
