Jyri Juslen: More than 40% of rental housing in Finland is supported by state

More than 40% of rental housing in Finland is provided with state support, which makes it possible to simultaneously cover both middle- and low-income segments of the population, Senior Adviser of the Finnish Ministry of the Environment Jyri Juslen said during a panel discussion at WUF13, Report informs.

According to him, Finland's housing policy is based on a constitutional principle whereby public authorities are obligated to promote the realization of citizens' right to housing.

Juslen emphasized that the key role in implementing this policy belongs to municipalities, which are responsible for local planning and housing development.

"Finland has a system of long-term agreements between the state and municipalities on land use, housing, and transport, and it is this system that sets the framework for urban development," he noted.

According to the ministry representative, such agreements cover 62 municipalities across seven regions of the country.

He noted that the system links the development of transport infrastructure with housing construction commitments, promoting more balanced urban development.
